Charity -- NHCC holiday party Dec 9th
A few years ago we moved away from the grab bag gift exchange to donating to a charity and we have never looked back. It is a small something that the club can do for others.
If you want to participate please bring an unwrapped gift to our Holiday party, or a check made out to Child FIRST.
Child FIRST is a program that started in Bridgeport and is now statewide, focusing on working with families with children ages birth to six. It is a home-based early intervention service which works with the most vulnerable young children in families experiencing poverty, maternal depression, domestic violence, substance abuse and homelessness. Many of the children suffer from developmental delays, emotional and behavioral problems, and past abuse/neglect. Child FIRST is seeking donations of toys, books or gift cards to make this year's holiday brighter. Please consider getting toys geared to children from 2-7.
The New Haven Camera Club would like to support a statewide program called Child FIRST by collecting toys (or contributions) for children ages birth to 7 instead of having a grab bag. Child FIRST is a program that works with young children and their parents/caregivers together in the home. They help with the child's behavioral or learning problems and with stresses in their parent's lives such as poverty, depression, violence, abuse/neglect, homelessness. If you would like to participate, please bring a wrapped toy to the Holiday party. And thank you very much. Ann Yost

Any paid member is welcome to participate. The shows may be on any topic: travel, nature, humor, etc. Each show may contain any number photographs, with or without narration, with or without music, but must be no longer than 5 minutes.
Members planning to present a show send the slideshow to Lisa (or drop off a CD) so that they can plan for the evening and prepare ballots for the voting. You can use the free www.yousendit.com to email large files.
For those of you attending the holiday party please note that slideshows for our annual mini digital competition (5 minute max on any subject after dinner) are due to Lisa by Thursday December 5th.
For those of you attending the holiday party please note that slideshows for our annual mini digital competition (5 minute max on any subject after dinner) are due to Lisa by Thursday December 5th.
The members in attendance vote on their favorite show. The winner in each category receives a Ruth Sprague Memorial Award. These awards honor the memory of the late Ruth Sprague, a longtime club member.
1) The show format must be one that the computer being provided can handle. Shows in the .exe format (from Pro Show gold on Windows) are normally the simplest to handle. However, it may be possible to project shows in other formats depending on the capabilities of the computer being provided.
2) Shows to be displayed must be given to the member providing the computer at or before the deadline so that the member providing the computer has an opportunity to be sure the shows will run properly before the competition night. The member providing the group computer will make a “best effort” attempt to run the show, though there may be cases where this is not possible.
3) The show file should be named as follows: LastName-FirstName-Title, for example “Barnett-William-Bridges of Somerset County”. This will allow the shows to be copied to a single directory for projection and be easily identified.

Help Needed -- backup person for Raffle
Help needed! We need a backup person for selling raffle tickets at the NHCC meetings. Linda Thomas does a great job! but when she is not there we do not have a raffle.
Our raffle helps to keep our dues low and our speakers coming. We typically bring in ~$600 a year (15 "regular" meetings at $35-$50 per meeting) in raffles, which can cover equipment expenses and speakers. This year to date we are way below our average so we could really use some help!

Photo competition deadline THIS Friday
Photo competition deadline THIS Friday
The NHCC handbook has been updated, please download it and read it, it is your responsibility to know the rules.
The New Haven Camera Club expects that its membership will adhere to the highest ethical standards when complying with its competition rules. It is especially important that all photographs entered into competitions be the exclusive work of the maker (except for commercially made prints or digital photographs scanned from a slide original allowed by the rules).
Highlights:
All aspects of the image must be taken by the photographer (Clipart, Textures, etc. from other people, or purchased, are NOT permitted).
Images of a similar nature may not be submitted again once that image has won a ribbon.
The winning same image (or a very similar rendition taken at the same time) may not be submitted into a different competition or in a different season.
Please note that there are NO makeups (in electronic images only, makeups are allowed in prints)
Please note that there no way to email images late if you have problems, so we urge you please do NOT to wait until the last minute to submit your photographs.
Setups are ONLY allowed in Class B
You can save the pdf with the instructions for uploading images into competition
1. Must be brought in by 7:15 in order for the print handlers to have time to write the titles on the score sheets and organize the prints.
2. Prints must be between 8 by 10 inches and 16 by 20 inches.
3. Prints must be mounted on mat board or foam core board. Any size mat board or foam core board is allowed up to 16"x20"
4. Prints may be matted conventionally or electronically as long as the maximum dimensions are not exceeded.
5. On the back of each print clearly print your name and address, title, order designation (1 or 2), and an arrow indicating which edge is the top. This information may be printed on one or more labels affixed to the back if you prefer not to write on the mount.
6. If you miss a meeting you are allowed to enter makeups (in prints only). The lowest 4 (class A) or 6 (class B) scores are dropped so it is your choice to take a zero for the missed print or enter a makeup print.
Please check out our NHCC BLOG http://nhccphotoblog.blogspot.com/. Our Blog contains relevant and timely information and you can subscribe to our blog to receive an email when the blog is updated. Members should subscribe to our Blog in order to stay informed.

It is especially important that all photographs entered into competitions be the exclusive work of the maker (except for commercially made prints or digital photographs scanned from a slide original allowed by the rules).
Highlights:
We have friendly photography competitions once a month (8 times a year, plus an "End of Year" competition)
|
Number of entries per contest:
a. Each member may enter a maximum of 2 photographs into the print competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 16 entries.
b. Each member may enter a maximum of 2 photographs into the open electronic competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 16 open electronic entries.
c. Each member may enter a maximum of 1 photograph into assigned subject in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 8 assigned subject entries.
d. Each member may enter a maximum of 1 photograph into image artistry competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 8 image artistry entries.
Cumulative Score is the sum total of all print or electronic photograph scores to date. At the end of the competition year the highest 6 - 12 scores of each maker (depending on the category) are summed to determine the cumulative score. Makers can compete in more than one category and can have cumulative scores in each category. These points will count toward an award for highest cumulative point total for the year presented at the Annual Dinner.
a. To be ranked in prints (class A or B) for cumulative score, the maker must have submitted at least 12 photographs (8 contests times 2 photographs per contest and you can have 4 makeups or 4 zeros).
b. To be ranked in class B electronic photographs, the maker must have submitted at least 10 photographs (8 contests times 2 photographs per contest and you can have up to 6 zeros).

HOLIDAY CHARITY OPPORTUNITY New Haven Camera Club is proud to be supporting a statewide program called Child FIRST once again this year. This is a collection of toys or monetary contributions for children ages birth to 7 years old who are less fortunate than most. We have substituted this worthwhile program instead of the grab bag that we have run in the past, and because it was so successful we are running it again. Special thanks to the Yost's who suggested this to the club, and who hand deliver the presents to Child FIRST.
Child FIRST is a program that works with young children and their parents/caregivers together in the home. They help with the child's behavioral or learning problems and with stresses in their parent's lives such as poverty, depression, violence, abuse/neglect, or homelessness.
If you would like to make a child happy this holiday, please bring a wrapped toy to the Holiday party. Monetary gifts are also welcome for your convenience.
And Thank You Very, Very Much.
For Those Who Are Unable To Join Our Holiday Party A HAPPY HEALTHY HOLIDAY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES!

Mini Show Competition December 9th
Mini Show Competition December 9th
Each year the NHCC holds a Mini Show Competition at the holiday party in December for digital slides and video projected using a computer connected to an electronic projector.

Bio:
Betty Wiley is an award-winning photographer who resides in Massachusetts on Cape Cod in the beautiful, little town of Yarmouth Port. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, she moved to Massachusetts over 30 years ago and bought a home on the Cape with her husband in 2006. She quickly fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and since then, she has spent countless hours exploring the Cape with her camera. She believes that good light is often key to a successful photograph. Often, the storms that move through the area create dramatic light and beautiful clouds and when that happens, she usually grabs her camera and hops in her car as the skies begin to clear.
Betty is a frequent contributor to a number of magazines on Cape Cod and the South Shore. She was featured in a photo essay which appeared in the July (2011) issue of Cape Cod magazine which showcased her images taken on Cape Cod and the islands. She has numerous magazine covers to her credit and is a sought-after speaker, instructor and workshop leader.
She belongs to several local camera clubs, and she was named “photographer of the year” for 2010 and her image of sandhill cranes taken in Bosque del Apache won “image of the year” for 2011. She won the top award in her class for 2012. She belongs to several meet-up groups and is a frequent instructor for the Events by Amy (http://www.meetup.com/Photography-Events-by-Amy/). Betty has received numerous accolades for her teaching and on-location workshops. http://avagracestudio.com/
