Join NHCC on Monday November 11th for Mark Bowie's presentation MOONLIT: how to photograph by moonlight

Join NHCC on Monday November 11th for Mark Bowie's presentation MOONLIT: how to photograph by moonlight

Where: Unitarian Universalist church in Hamden;
Address: 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT 06517
Come at 6:45, the program starts at 7:00pm
Programs are FREE and open to the public

(You must be a member to compete, attend workshops and field trips).
We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month for programs and the fourth Monday for competitions.

Program Description: Two years in the making... the debut of this stunning project will feature new still images, time-lapse sequences and night video — with the goal of exposing night photographers to the image-making potential of a variety of moonlit landscapes, during all phases of the moon.

In targeting the Milky Way, most night photographers avoid photographing under a large moon. Yet there’s so much more to discover under the light of the moon. Moonlight provides many benefits for photographing the earthbound landscape. It casts fill light, illuminating details and colors of both man-made structures and natural subjects. It theatrically interacts with clouds, fog and water, offering creative possibilities not only for shooting stills, but time-lapse and video. It can add ambience, mystery and a sense of wonder. The possibilities are limited only by our vision and imagination.

I’ll discuss using apps to put photographers in position to best take advantage of moonlit
subjects. I’ll present innovative field and processing techniques, and cover camera settings, how
to compose and focus, and determine exposure. I’ll cover artistic possibilities presented under
all phases, optical phenomena created by moonlight, photographing eclipses and long exposures
of the moon, shooting and blending multiple exposures to capture detail in the moon and
landscape, and shooting time interval and time lapse sequences to creatively present the moon’s
trajectory across the night sky.

Ultimately, my goal is to expose viewers to the artistic possibilities of this little-covered facet of
night photography while helping them discover more about the natural world — lit by the light
of the moon.

Competition

The October 28th Competition is now open for entries on Photo Contest Pro

Photo Contest Pro has been set up to accept entries for our next competition. The competition will be on Monday, October 28th. Entries are due by Friday, October 25th, at 11:59 PM

Please remember that this year the image size allowed has changed. In the past, images could be up to 1024 pixels in height or width.
Now images can be 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high. This change is in keeping with the New England Camera Club Council which has changed its image sizes for interclub competitions.

Here are some examples of images which can be submitted this year:

a landscape which is 1400 x 1050

a vertical which is 800 x 1050

a square image which is 1050 x 1050

Note that the vertical dimension cannot be more than 1050.

If you accidentally forget to resize your images, Photo Contest Pro may still accept them if they are not too far off.
However, everyone should strive to resize their images to conform to the guidelines.

Don't wait until the last minute to submit your images.

One last reminder - The assigned subject for October is Architecture.

Image Critique Night

Photo Critique Program

This is a reminder that our October 14 meeting will feature a Photo Critique Program. This informal program will be led by our more senior members but anyone can share their thoughts on the images presented. The fact that this program is being held early in the club year should prove helpful to newer members as they contemplate what images to enter into competition.

Paul Peterson is organizing the program. He will be using a variety of images from various sources. A few of our members have emailed images to Paul for inclusion in the program. If you have a few images which you would like to be included, attach them to an email and send them to Paul  pmjpeterson@sbcglobal.net   Images should be sent by Saturday, October 12.

Hope to see everyone on Monday.
