At Amherst, I had the opportunity to assist in a workshop on Flat Lay Photography for several hours.
What is Flat Lay Photography?
Flat Lay Photography is a photograph taken directly from above, looking down on usually products or food. It gives a bird's eye view of what it is you’re photographing and is an extremely popular genre of photography on social media.
I picked up a few tips that I would like to share with you.
I am bringing that you may use:
· 3 or 4 backgrounds
· Several Items to photograph - at the Amherst Workshop the instructor used a lot of items common to scrapbooking
YOU ARE TO BRING:
1. Large plastic storage box or cardboard box. This is your “table.”
2. Foam core sheet to fit over it – will not be a perfect fit nor does it have to be - this is a shooting surface.
3. At least 2-3 backgrounds for your shooting surface. This can be anything:
· Fabric, lace, tablecloth, black felt, any color felt, marble slab, wood slab – let your imagination run wild
· Things to photograph – suggestions:
Ø Baby shoes
Ø Jewelry
Ø Coins
Ø Food
Ø Vintage items
Ø Scrapbooking supplies
Ø Crayons
Ø Colored pencils
4. Reflector – you can use a sheet of foam core
5. Tripod – optional
6. Lighting – optional. We will use natural lighting.
I will bring items to demonstrate, and help where I can. And we will all have a terrific time helping each other.
