In the past, the only way for photographers to prepare for a sunrise or sunset shoot in a particular location was to show up in person and scout the terrain in advance. But in the modern day, smartphone apps can save you time by enabling you to “virtually scout” a shooting location for any time of day or night, before you even arrive. This presentation covers the use of three different apps: Sun Surveyor predicts the path of the sun and moon for dawn and dusk shoots; StarWalk shows you where and when constellations and the Milky Way will enter the scene for your night shoots; and Depth of Field Calculator allows you to manually focus your lens to maximize depth of field, even when you can’t see the landscape in front of you.
