Secrets to Photographing National Parks by Chris Nicholson

We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month for our programs and the fourth Monday of the month for our competitions. Meetings are usually held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:00 pm Sept-May) at the Whitney Center, Cultural Arts Center, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden. Meetings are free and open to the public. You must be a member to compete, attend workshops and field trips. Come at 6:45, programs start at 7:00. 

From sea to shining sea, the national parks preserve some of the country’s most unique wilderness areas, and are a gift to nature photographers everywhere. In this presentation, Chris Nicholson delves into what the park system offers to the photographer, and shares secrets about photographing some of its gems. Topics will include the best times of year to photograph different parks, and how to travel safely and photograph in their various environments, including desert, alpine, forest and coastline. Many of the national parks will be touched upon, with special emphasis on Acadia, Death Valley, Everglades, Grand Teton, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Shenandoah and Yellowstone.

Chris Nicholson is a photographer, instructor and writer based in the northeast. He is author of the very helpful manual/book "Photographing National Parks" published by Sidelight Books, 2015. Chris also organizes and leads workshops with the popular National Parks at Night program. A former magazine editor for 10 years, he has worked independently since 2004, with his cameras focused primarily on the travel and sports genres. His work has appeared in several books and over 30 magazines, and he is a book editor for National Parks Traveler. He is also a proud member of
