The New England Camera Club Council, Inc. invites each NECCC member camera club to select one of their camera club members to receive free registration to the next annual NECCC conference, held at U-Mass, Amherst, Mass. on July 13-15, 2012. The complimentary registration gives the person submitted by your club all the learning experiences, photo opportunities and inspirational programs that go along with the conference. Please note, that the enrollment covers only the registration fee. The recipient will be responsible for his or her own room, meals and transportation.

Rules governing the courtesy enrollment:

1. Candidates must be at least eighteen years of age as of July 1, 2012.

2. A candidate must be a member of an NECCC member Club in good standing (i.e. dues paid for the current year).

3. Candidates must have never attended a previous NECCC conference.

4. Selection of the candidate will be the responsibility of the individual clubs.

5. Applications may be made by email from the club President.

Applications will not be accepted after the deadline (March 1, 2012).

6. The application cannot be transferred to another person. Once someone has been submitted, accepted and has received the key paper work, that person must register for the conference. If he/she cannot attend, another person cannot take his/her place. The club’s courtesy enrollment for that year will be forfeited.

7. NECCC decision in all matters relating to this courtesy enrollment will be final.

Spring is coming and the Trips Committee has planned several field trips to get us out of the house and behind the camera lens again! Below are the trips - you may sign up at a meeting or via email

Easy Directions for Filing, Sizing, Titling Images

for Competition

Photographs must be submitted as JPEG images

with the .jpg extension.

Convert the photograph to the sRGB color space. Your images may already be in that color space. If the color of your images seems off when they are projected, you may want to check this.

Our projector requires that images be no more than 1024 WIDE and no more than 768 HIGH. (If you submit a vertical image, it will typically be approximately 500 wide to allow it to be 768 high.) See illustrations.

From looking at the illustrations, you can see that images which are vertical or square will be smaller than horizontal images.

Titles - Please use the following format.

Have you used the dollar sign $ to separate fields?

Organization Hint: Make a folder for NHCC Possible Comp images. These should be duplicates of your better photographs. Make another folder for NHCC Competition 2011-12. Don’t put anything into this folder unless it is sized correctly and titled correctly. When you open this folder, all of your images will be in the same format and you can simply copy what you have previously done.

Remember, the number of entries per contest has changed this year. Please note the numbers in each category below. (from the NHCC Handbook)

a. Each member may enter a maximum of 2 photographs into the print competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 16 entries.

Bill Barnett has offered to hold an image critique in his home. Participants should bring images they would like feedback on in a manner that can easily be downloaded to a computer, such as a flash drive, CD, memory card (with only selected images on it). Images will be critiqued by Bill and by other participants in a positive way, suggesting ways that can improve the shot, make it pop and stand out in competition. You will learn not only from your own images, but also from images of other participants. Due to space constraints, this is available to only 5 participants.

WHAT: A sleigh rally at the Green Mountain Horse Association in South Woodstock VT (www.gmhainc.org)

WHEN: Saturday/Sunday January 21-22, 2012

LODGING: A block of 10 rooms has been held at the Quality Inn at Quechee Gorge, 5817 Woodstock Road, Rt. 4, Quechee, VT 05059 for Saturday Jan 21st. Cost is $85.00 and the hold is only until 12/21/11. You may be able to get a room after 12/21 but it may cost more. Phone # 802-295-7600.

If you are interested in going, please contact Ann Yost, Trips Chair, and also call the Quality Inn in Quechee Gorge to hold your room. The cancellation policy is 24 hours notice. A few years ago we moved away from the cheap grab bag gift exchange to donating to a charity and we have never looked back. It is a small something that the club can do for others. If you want to participate please bring an unwrapped gift to our Holiday party, or a check made out to Child FIRST.

Child FIRST is a program that started in Bridgeport and is now statewide, focusing on working with families with children ages birth to six. It is a home-based early intervention service which works with the most vulnerable young children in families experiencing poverty, maternal depression, domestic violence, substance abuse and homelessness. Many of the children suffer from developmental delays, emotional and behavioral problems, and past abuse/neglect.

Child FIRST is seeking donations of toys, books or gift cards to make this year's holiday brighter. Please consider getting toys geared to children from 2-6.

Perhaps next year we can participate with this group photographically. I have talked about HELP Portrait for a couple of years...It would be wonderful if we could organize something to help Child FIRST.

• Travel to Park Right Corp on 277 Gold Street in Brooklyn.

• Walk over Brooklyn Bridge where there are excellent pictures of the NY skyline

• Lunch in Little Italy 12:30 PM

• Meet at South Street Seaport at 2:00 PM to walk back to Brooklyn

• Brooklyn Bridge Park to set up for sunset shoot of the Brooklyn Bridge with the New York Skyline at 3:30 PM

• Proceed to the parking garage for 7PM return

• Stop for dinner on the way home if the group wants to

Images of Cuba: A Country Defined by a Revolution explores an island nation hidden from most Americans for over 50 years. Three primary destinations were visited in search of photographs: Havana on the north side of the island, Trinidad on the south side, and the area west of Havana. Approximately 300 still images interspersed with video clips accompanied by live narration and suitable music are used to tell the story of a visit to modern Cuba.

Program Description
Are you curious about Cuba, an island nation hidden from most Americans for over 50 years? Does the prospect of a city filled with 1950-era American cars fascinate you? Are you wondering why travel to Cuba is so attractive in spite of restrictions imposed by the US government? Are you interested in seeing the latest techniques of show production that incorporate video clips in addition to still images and appropriate music. Then you must see Images of Cuba: A Country Defined by a Revolution. In Cuba our photography took us to three primary destinations: Havana on the north side of the island, Trinidad on the south side of the island, and the area west of Havana. In Havana photographic highlights include the Museum of the Revolution, the Streets of Old Havana, 1950-era U.S. automobiles, visits to Café Taberna and Cabaret Topicana, a boxing training session, and the Malecón, the 7-Killometer long drive along Havana Bay which forms the northern edge of the city where people gather day and night; this is also an excellent venue for sunsets. Trinidad is a much smaller city, but one with its own charms including a open-air venue where local musical groups perform. West of Havana is a tobacco growing region; our visit there included the small town of Viñales. The program contains approximately 300 still images captured over a 10-day visit interspersed with video clips to tell the story of a visit to this hidden country. Live narration and suitable background music complete the presentation.

This four hour introductory workshop on Sunday September 18th is designed to introduce you to the exciting world of water drops. The workshop will take you from simple water drops to different colored water collisions, allowing you to get many breathtaking images. No equipment is necessary, as we will provide it for you! Co-led by Susan Candelario and Roman Kurywczak, they will guide you to some of the equipment that you can use from the basic to more advanced with the ability for you to capture the many phases of water drops as well as water drop collisions. New NHCC Handbook

The NHCC handbook has been revised. You may download it here. We suggest that all members, new and exisiting, review the guidelines set forth in the handbook. Changes to the image competitions are also reflected in the revised handbook. The handbook includes topics like using setups, using previously entered images into competition, entering into competition similar images, etc.

The handbook is 12 pages, printed double-sided. We HIGHLY suggest that you print and review a current copy of the handbook.

The cliffnotes version of two main changes:

You may only submit ONE image in the assigned subject competition
There is now a Creative Image Artistry category. This category is meant to encourage artistry and creativity. The image artistry category will consist of electronic images which are enhanced as much as the maker desires. Types of effects include, but are not limited to, artistic filters, digital painting, montages, composites, mylar, infrared, black light, image out of the frame and other such creative effects which may be used freely. The end product may be the result of in-camera and/or post-processing creativity on the part of the maker. It is the discretion of the maker to subject an image into either open or image artistry.

The Denise Ippolito Workshop held Sunday Sept 11th was great! We had 8 registrants and were VERY greatful to Barbara Vietzke who graciously allowed us to take over her house for the workshop. We watched Denise take photographs and apply various creative filters to them to really make them "pop". Denise kept emphasized that we are crafting our images and often used multiple effects/filters on one image. Her instruction was energized but easy to follow along!

"During my 50 minute slide show “A Blend of Art and Nature” we will explore the combination of art and nature. My artistic bird photographs and creative filter designs will inspire you to step out of the box of conformity. I will share some of my techniques for post processing as well as in-camera captures. The program will be jam-packed with an assortment of imagery, including my pleasing blur images along with some of my tack sharp flight shots. A visual experience of photographs from local hot spots to images from around the country. This slide show will have something for everyone. "

The EID Interclub Competition is open to all PSA-member clubs. This competition consists of four competitions/rounds during each competition year occurring in November, January, March, and May. For those attending NECCC, please join us to continue on the tradition of Sandy & Ann Sanderson & Kathy Katz. They traditionally had a cocktail hour from 5 pm - 6 pm on Friday night. The Parisi's would like to carry on this tradition in Sandy's memory.

This year it will be held from 5 pm - 6:30 pm on Friday. We will be having food & drink for our club members. This gathering will be held in North Dorm Building A. Annual Awards Competition
At the Annual Awards Banquet each year the print- and electronic photograph-of-the year competitions will be held.

In the first round all photographs that receive two or three "ins" will advance to the second round of judging.
In the second round only those photographs receiving three "ins" will advance to the final round.

Judges will select a first, second, and honorable mention from those photographs receiving three "ins". If in the second round only two photographs receive three "ins", the judges will pick a first and second place from those two photographs. An honorable mention will be selected from those photographs receiving two "ins".

If only one photograph receives three “ins” it will automatically be given first place. A second and honorable mention will be chosen from those photographs receiving two "ins".
5. Electronic Photographs: After first, second, and honorable mention photographs are chosen in each class (B and A), the two first place photographs (one from each class) will be judged against each other for electronic photograph-of-the-year.
6. The electronic photograph judged to be the best nature photograph (in a separate competition) will be awarded the Jane Sibley Honor Award.

7. The electronic photograph judged to be the best landscape or seascape (in a separate competition) will be awarded the Joseph A. Dichello Jr. Memorial Award.

8. Delivery of entries: Bring prints to the year end dinner. Electronic photographs (including those for the Joe Dichello Memorial Award and Jane Sibley Honor Award) must be e-mailed to an e-mail address designated by the Vice President for Inside competitions by midnight on the Friday night prior to the annual dinner to give the competition committee time to organize the photographs for the competition.
Alternatively the director of the electronic competitions may have retained the photos used during the year and only the titles of the selected photos will have to be sent. Each electronic photography competitor will receive an e-mail after the May competition with specific instructions.
9. Awards: Ribbons are awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and honorable mention winners in each category/class.Trophies are award to the photograph-of-the-year chosen in each category of competition. It is presented at the first meeting in September.
10. Return of entries: Prints will be returned at the end of the dinner meeting. Please claim yours before you leave. Electronic photographs will not be returned.

NEW HAVEN CAMERA CLUB YEAR END BANQUET Monday May 23, 2011

We hope you can all join in this final event of a very successful centennial Club year of the New Haven Camera Club. Good fellowship and the opportunity to see the best slides, prints, and electronic photographs from this past season always make for a great evening.

The Jane Sibley Honor Award is presented to the best nature photograph selected by the judges in a separate electronic competition. Jane is a long time member of the club known for doing a variety of photography including nature.

The Joe DiChello Award is presented to the best landscape or seascape photograph selected by the judges in a separate electronic competition. Joe was a long time member of the club who was known for his excellent landscape photography.

NEW HAVEN CAMERA CLUB YEAR END BANQUET

Come and join the members of the New Haven Camera Club for the end of the year banquet. Come participate in the competition for the print of the year, electronic image of the year, the Joe Dichello Memorial Landscape/Seascape Award and the Jane Sibley Nature Honor Award. Each member may submit up to 4 prints or 4 electronic images as well as 2 additional electronic images for the two special awards. See handbook for details. Three outside judges will select the winners!.

Menu choices for the dinner are as follows: Baked Scrod, Grilled Sliced London Broil or Breast of Chicken Marsala. Each meal includes fresh seasonal vegetables, starch, bread and butter, coffee/tea and dessert.

After dinner, awards will be given for this season’s high cumulative average in each class and the Everett Wilson Trophy for the most improved beginning photographer will be award. Then the Print, Electronic Photograph, and Slide-of-the-Year competitions will be held.

The New Haven Camera Club will hold it's annual end-of-the-year and awards banquet at "Eli's on Whitney" restaurant, 2392 Whitney Ave, Hamden, The restaurant is on the corner of Whitney Ave. and School Street, just one block north of the Hamden Town Hall. There is a parking lot across the street from Eli's on School Street. The banquet facilities are in the lower level of the restaurant; either enter on Whitney Ave and go through the bar to the back of the restaurant and proceed downstairs, or enter on the School St. side and go directly downstairs. For those coming from the New Haven area, come up Whitney Ave to the Hamden Town Hall and proceed one more block north to the restaurant. The parking lot will be across from the restaurant on your right. For those coming from farther away and using the Merritt Parkway, take exit 61 and proceed north on Whitney Ave. as explained above. If coming north on I-91, take exit 5, Willow St. to Whitney Ave, and then proceed north on Whitney. With 3 out of 4 competitions complete for this competition season the New Haven CC is in 2nd place out of 23 clubs in Class 1 with 208 points. The Impact Group from the United Kingdom is in first place with 209 points and two clubs, Fotoferia Club from Poland and Terra Australis Digital Image Group from Australia, are tied for third with 204 points. In this group almost 1/3 of the clubs are from outside the United States. The entries for the fourth and final competition have been sent. Currently the top 6 clubs are all within 6 points of each other so the final standing will depend on the last competition.

In this competition we received 88 points for second place behind Boston West with 90 points. Gateway was in 3rd place with 87 points. Overall for the season we were tied for 5th place with Gateway in Class A at 266 points. Boston West was in first with 277 points.

We hope you can all join in this final event of a very successful centennial Club year of the New Haven Camera Club. Good fellowship and the opportunity to see the best slides, prints, and electronic photographs from this past season always make for a great evening.

The Jane Sibley Honor Award is presented to the best nature photograph selected by the judges in a separate electronic competition. Jane is a long time member of the club known for doing a variety of photography including nature.

The Joe DiChello Award is presented to the best landscape or seascape photograph selected by the judges in a separate electronic competition. Joe was a long time member of the club who was known for his excellent landscape photography.

Come and join the members of the New Haven Camera Club for the end of the year banquet. Come participate in the competition for the print of the year, electronic image of the year, the Joe Dichello Memorial Landscape/Seascape Award and the Jane Sibley Nature Honor Award. Each member may submit up to 4 prints or 4 electronic images as well as 2 additional electronic images for the two special awards. See handbook for details. Three outside judges will select the winners!.

Menu choices for the dinner are as follows: Baked Scrod, Grilled Sliced London Broil or Breast of Chicken Marsala. Each meal includes fresh seasonal vegetables, starch, bread and butter, coffee/tea and dessert.

After dinner, awards will be given for this season’s high cumulative average in each class and the Everett Wilson Trophy for the most improved beginning photographer will be award. Then the Print, Electronic Photograph, and Slide-of-the-Year competitions will be held.

The New Haven Camera Club will hold it's annual end-of-the-year and awards banquet at "Eli's on Whitney" restaurant, 2392 Whitney Ave, Hamden, The restaurant is on the corner of Whitney Ave. and School Street, just one block north of the Hamden Town Hall. There is a parking lot across the street from Eli's on School Street. The banquet facilities are in the lower level of the restaurant; either enter on Whitney Ave and go through the bar to the back of the restaurant and proceed downstairs, or enter on the School St. side and go directly downstairs. For those coming from the New Haven area, come up Whitney Ave to the Hamden Town Hall and proceed one more block north to the restaurant. There is a change to our upcoming schedule. Instead of presenting his program “Easy Photoshop”, Paul Peterson will present “Easy Close Up Photography.” The change has been made because it is felt that the Close Up Photography program will appeal to more of our members. Paul has given programs on close up photography for many years. The program that he will give on April 11 is all new and geared to the digital photographer. Members of NHCC have done very well in two recent print competitions. In the winter NECCC color print competition, Barbara Vietzke received a first place (score of 27) for her print "From My Back Yard." NHCC received a ribbon for coming in 2nd. among 27 clubs competing.

At the Photographic Expo 2011 at the Milford Fine Arts Center five of our members won ribbons and awards: In Nature/Animal, Linda Brinckerhoff won an honorable mention and she won a second place in Landscape/Seascape. Art Yost won a third place in that same category. In Open category, Fred Rosenthal won a first place and a third place. In the Creative category, Fred Rosenthal won a first place and William Barnett won second. The Best In Show award went to Lisa Cuchara for her image "Two Hummingbirds-My Turn. The brochure listing all the entries had an image of a portrait by Tom Cuchara which had won last year's competition. Congratulations to all our winners and a thank you to all who compete so that many can enjoy the fine work being done.

"A Day in the Field with Adam Jones"

Workshop Overview: I envision the workshop as very hands on, nuts and bolts photography, with tips and techniques from 30+ years of photography. I'm open to a very full day, from sunrise to sunset if the club members wish to go that long. We will certainly break for lunch and dinner based around our shooting schedules of course. If the group wants a break in the middle of the day, we can do a morning shoot, then break and regroup for an afternoon shoot.

I'll leave it up to your club to offer several shooting locations, and we can visit as many of the locations as we need to fill the day or length of time the club wants. The more varied the locations, the more situations we can address and learn from in the field. I'm also fine with shooting architecture indoors or out, city skylines, zoos, botanical gardens, etc. About the only thing that does not work well for a mixed group is strict wildlife, where many photographers may not have the right equipment for such a specialized shoot.

An all day event -- location(s) of the clubs choice (We were thinking of perhaps Hammassett for sunrise, then breakfast, then heading East to Mystic until Sunset)

I'll cover scenics, depth of field considerations, finding the best compositions, natural light, filters, macro lenses and accessories, full flash and fill flash. Working with me in the field it is very easy for me to grasp each participants skill level and to work with them one on one.

Fee: $75/person, cash or check made payable to Adam Jones, collected by the club program organizer 4 weeks prior to the event

Join us Monday night for "The Light of Midnight: Photographing the Landscape at Night" by Mark Bowie

Presentation: Monday March 14th, 2011

Nature photographer Mark Bowie, a specialist on photographing the landscape at night, will give a presentation on nocturnal landscape photography. He will talk about determining nighttime exposures, focusing in the dark, shooting long exposures, double exposures, timed intervals, and “painting” with artificial light. He will discuss shooting exposures only seconds long to eight hours, with tips on photographing star trails, planets, moonlit landscapes, lightning, fireworks, city lights and the Northern Lights.

Learn how to capture the mystery, wonder and magic of this little explored facet of the photographic landscape. At night, the camera allows us to record phenomena we are physically incapable of seeing. The photographer can never quite be sure of what he or she will create. That’s part of the allure and the excitement!

Biography:

Mark Bowie is a professional nature photographer and writer. His work has been published internationally in books, on calendars and posters, and in advertising media. His first two coffee table books, Adirondack Waters: Spirit of the Mountains and In Stoddard's Footsteps: The Adirondacks Then & Now, have become a landmark regional publications. Presentation: Monday March 14th, 2011

Nature photographer Mark Bowie, a specialist on photographing the landscape at night, will give a presentation on nocturnal landscape photography. He will talk about determining nighttime exposures, focusing in the dark, shooting long exposures, double exposures, timed intervals, and “painting” with artificial light. He will discuss shooting exposures only seconds long to eight hours, with tips on photographing star trails, planets, moonlit landscapes, lightning, fireworks, city lights and the Northern Lights.

Learn how to capture the mystery, wonder and magic of this little explored facet of the photographic landscape. At night, the camera allows us to record phenomena we are physically incapable of seeing. The photographer can never quite be sure of what he or she will create. That’s part of the allure and the excitement!

Biography:

Mark Bowie is a professional nature photographer and writer. His work has been published internationally in books, on calendars and posters, and in advertising media. His first two coffee table books, Adirondack Waters: Spirit of the Mountains and In Stoddard's Footsteps: The Adirondacks Then & Now, have become a landmark regional publications. "My general approach for an all day seminar is to present two shows: The day is kicked off with a Nature and Wildlife show. A second show is presented during the afternoon session, featuring Travel destinations. Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. The program is entitled "Through the Lens of Adam Jones." During the Nature program I discuss strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images."

Morning: Nature and Wildlife Show (This program highlights strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images)

Afternoon: Travel Show (This program highlights travel from 9 different countries and demonstrates techniques and strategies for great travel images.)

Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. At least three of the following four programs will also be presented.

1. Taking Control: Covers Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, and Focus; Where to be in control of these variables, and how to use them creatively using side by side image comparisons.

2. Lighting & Composition: Centers on developing your awareness of natural light and learning to use the elements of design to create award winning compositions. Flash will also be discussed.

3. Extending the Limits: Focuses on photo realistic HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging; Helicon Focus software for unlimited depth of field; Expo Disc for correct white balance in the field; and the use DXO Optics pro for batch converting raw images.

4. Photoshop: Demonstrates Adam’s workflow through Adobe Camera Raw and DXO Optics Pro using raw images. Also includes demo stitching panoramic images, and unlimited depth of field via Helicon Focus.

Results of Winter NECCC Interclub Competition

The following images were used to represent the club in Pictorial category of the Winter NECCC Digital Slide Interclub Competition:

Overall we received 85 points which puts us in the middle of the pack in class A. Merrimack Valley and Boston West were tied for first with 100 points.

In the nature competition we were represented by the following:

Antov, Andrey, Proportions, 24

Barnett, William, Great Blue Herons & Stick, 23

Cuchara, Tom, Female Blue Bird, 24

Prestash, Gary, Hairy Woodpecker and Berries, 24

Overall we received 95 points. Cape Cod Viewfinders was in first place with 103 points. After two competitions we are tied with 3 other clubs for fourth place with 186 points.

This competition is judged on a scale of 3 to 9 for each judge with a total of 9 to 27, slightly different from our club.

NOTE: Currently I do not have enough images in my Possible Entries for Nature folder to create a strong entry for the Glennie competition. I have a few entries from Antov, Tom and Lisa Chuchara, and Saldana, and lots for Prestash. I really need images from OTHER members of the club that meet the PSA nature definition regarding limits on manipulation. We are allowed to enter 10 images and I would prefer to choose each from a different member, though will do two per maker if needed. If you are interested in the interclub competitions, now is the time to demonstrate that interest by sending me images. The images MUST meet the PSA definition for manipulation, be 1024x768 pixels, and contain your name and title as the file name separated by a dollar sign. The closing date is coming up soon and I plan to send in our entry on Feb. 5.

Easy Directions for Filing, Sizing, Titling Images for Competition

Photographs must be submitted as JPEG images with the .jpg extension.

Convert the photograph to the sRGB color space. Your images may already be in that color space. If the color of your images seems off when they are projected, you may want to check this. Our projector requires that images be no more than 1024 WIDE and no more than 768 HIGH. (If you submit a vertical image, it will typically be approximately 500 wide to allow it to be 768 high.)

Images which are vertical or square will be smaller than horizontal images.

Titles - Please use the following format. Class&Image Number $LastName$FirstName$Title$Year-month (numeral).jpg

Organization Hint: Make a folder for NHCC Possible Comp images. These should be duplicates of your better photographs. Make another folder for NHCC Competition 2009-10. Don’t put anything into this folder unless it is sized correctly and titled correctly. When you open this folder, all of your images will be in the same format and you can simply copy what you have previously done.

We (NHCC) can provide one NECCC Courtesy Enrollment to a NHCC member that has never been to the NECCC photography conference before. If we have just one person that wants to attend we can send thenm, if we have more than one person we put the names into a cup and draw one name. Gary Higgs went from NHCC in 2010 (and his wife actually won a free NECCC registration for the 2011 meeting at the NECCC Saturday night event!)
We would like all names submitted by the February 14th meeting so that we can pick the winner and get all of the paperwork in by the March 1st deadline.

The New England Camera Club Council, Inc. invites each NECCC member camera club to select one of their camera club members to receive free registration to the next annual NECCC conference, held at U-Mass, Amherst, Mass. every July. The complimentary registration gives the person submitted by your club all the learning experiences, photo opportunities and inspirational programs that go along with the conference. Please note that the enrollment covers only the registration fee. The recipient will be responsible for his or her own room, meals and transportation.

Rules governing the courtesy enrollment

1. Candidates must be at least eighteen years of age as of July 1st

2. A candidate must be a member of an NECCC member club in good standing (i.e. club dues paid for the current year).

3. Candidates must have never attended a previous NECCC conference.

4. Selection of the candidates will be the responsibility of the individual clubs.

5. Applications may be made by email to the club president with the same information. Applications will not be accepted after the March 1st deadline.

As many of you know, I work a few days a week at The Fat Robin Birdwatching and Nature Shop in Hamden. It was nearly 6:00 PM last Monday and I was getting ready to close the store shortly when a tall, lanky fellow walked in and said he needed to get a few bags of millet seed. I looked at him and said "I know you". He said he knew me too but that his name was Harold and he was Shirley Mangler's husband and he was getting some seed to take home. We talked for a few minutes and I told him many of us miss not having Shirley at our meetings - I'm sure the folks from the Wallingford club feel the same way too, and I asked him to say hello to Shirley for all of us. She has had medical problems off and on and I'm sure a "thinking about you" card would really make her day.

I don't want to broadcast her home address all over the cyber world but if you would like to send Shirley a card, I'm sure that if you emailed or called Tom & Lisa Cuchara, they would be happy to give you Shirley's home address.

Please join the New Haven Camera Club as it celebrates its 100 year anniversary with an all day seminar by Adam Jones. Mr. Jones has been shooting professionally for over twenty years. He is a member of the Canon Explorers of Light Program.

"My general approach for an all day seminar is to present two shows: The day is kicked off with a Nature and Wildlife show. A second show is presented during the afternoon session, featuring Travel destinations. Both shows are presented without music, so audience participation is encouraged during all programs. The program is entitled "Through the Lens of Adam Jones." During the Nature program I discuss strategies and techniques for outstanding nature and wildlife images."

Over the day, I'll present at least three additional programs, these include the following:

3) Extending the Limits

4) Travel Show

Easy Directions for Filing, Sizing, Titling Images for Competition

Photographs must be submitted as JPEG images with the .jpg extension.

Convert the photograph to the sRGB color space. Your images may already be in that color space. If the color of your images seems off when they are projected, you may want to check this. Our projector requires that images be no more than 1024 WIDE and no more than 768 HIGH. (If you submit a vertical image, it will typically be approximately 500 wide to allow it to be 768 high.)

Images which are vertical or square will be smaller than horizontal images.

Titles - Please use the following format. Class&Image Number $LastName$FirstName$Title$Year-month (numeral).jpg

Examples
B1$Jones$Bill$Red_Skier$2009-11.jpg

B2$Jones$Bill$At_The_Beach$2009-11.jpg

S1$Jones$Bill$Glassware$2009-11.jpg

S is used for the assigned subject.

Do not leave any spaces. Use the underline character “_”instead of spaces.

Note: Your computer may automatically put .jpg at the end of the title. If that is the case, you should not put .jpg at the end or you will end up with .jpg.jpg

Look carefully at your completed title to make sure that it is correct.

Have you used the dollar sign $ to separate fields?

Have you used the underline “_” between words in the title?

Are the year and month correct? Does it end in .jpg ?

Organization Hint: Make a folder for NHCC Possible Comp images. These should be duplicates of your better photographs. Make another folder for NHCC Competition 2009-10. Don’t put anything into this folder unless it is sized correctly and titled correctly. When you open this folder, all of your images will be in the same format and you can simply copy what you have previously done.

Prints

1. Must be brought in by 7:15 in order for the print handlers to have time to write the titles on the score sheets and organize the prints

2. Prints must be between 8 by 10 inches and 16 by 20 inches.

3. Prints must be mounted on mat board or foam core board. Any size mat board or foam core board is allowed up to 16"x20".

4. Prints may be matted conventionally or electronically as long as the maximum dimensions are not exceeded.

5. On the back of each print clearly print your name and address, title, order designation (1 or 2), and an arrow indicating which edge is the top. This information may be printed on one or more labels affixed to the back if you prefer not to write on the mount.

Please note: If you are submitting make-up photographs, use the year and month of the competition being made up rather than the year and month of the competition into which entered. If entering make-up photographs for the October 2010 competition in the January 2011 competition, the year and month should be “2010-10”, not “2011-01”.

Dear Club Members,

I have put together an entry for the nature section of the NECCC interclub competitions for February. However, looking over the entries remaining in my collection it is apparent that we will need additional entries for the two remaining competitions this year: the April 2011 NECCC interclub competition and the Glennie Memorial Competition. This latter competition requires 10 entries with no more than two entries from a single individual.

These entries must meet the strict PSA definition for a nature image. This definition was described in a previous blog posting that can be accessed here: http://nhccphotoblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/nature-definition.html. When you send entries they must be no more than 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high. As the file name include your name (last, first) and a title separated by a dollar sign.

Galapagos Monday by Lisa Keller

We start our journey traveling through the scenic capital area of Quito, Ecuador. From there we visit the colorful Otavalo Market and the equatorial monument. We then travel 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador to the Galapagos Island. The Galapagos Islands are noted for containing a wide variety of wildlife that is unique only to those Islands and not seen elsewhere in the world. We will board our vessel and spend the next hour visiting many of the Islands that make up the Galapagos. The Islands are home to the famous Blue Footed Boobies, Galapagos Penguins, Sea Lions, the primeval Marine Iguanas and a wide variety of birds. We will also leave our vessel and camp out with the Giant Tortoises. Along our journey you will see video of the mating dance of the Blue Footed Boobies, the Marine Iguanas sunning themselves on the lava rocks and the Giant Tortoises out for a stroll. The inhabitants of these Islands are like nowhere else in the world. Did I mention that we will also visit the famous Darwin Station along the way?

Your “Tens” and Raising the Bar on your Photography

1.Gather up your top ten photographs into a portfolio (printed photographs or your iPad).

2.Present them really nicely.

3.When someone comes up and wants to see your photographs, you can show them those 10 photos.

4.When you take a photo that’s better than one of those ten, replace it, and put the other one in.

5.If you go for 3 or 4 months and they’re the same 10 damn photos, you know that you’re not working it—you need to push yourself!
