January Competition Postponed Again

January Competition Postponed Again

Whitney Center has informed us that due to the impending snowstorm on Monday, all activities have been cancelled. This means that our January 26 competition will have to be postponed again.

The new plan is to have that competition on February 9 (weather permitting). Denise already has your electronic images, so there is nothing more for you to do. Since we are already scheduled for February 9, the meeting will be held in our regular meeting room.

To minimize confusion, the February 9 competition will be moved to later in the year, probably April or May. You will be informed of the new competition date as soon as we clear the new date with the Whitney Center. The assigned subject "Teeth" will be moved to later in the year as well.

If you have already entered images for the February 9 competition, you may need to submit them again once we have a firm date for the makeup. You will be contacted if you are affected. If you were planning to submit images for February 9, please DO NOT submit them at this time.

The February 23 competition will not be affected by any of this. As long as the weather holds, it will be held as scheduled. The assigned subject for February 23 is "Ice" which seems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

By the way, February 2 is Groundhog's Day. According to lore, if the groundhog doesn't see his shadow (and he shouldn't in the midst of a snowstorm), then it means an early spring. Let's hope that is the case.

January Competition rescheduled for February 2

January Competition rescheduled for February 2

Due to the snow cancellation, our competition has been rescheduled for next Monday, February 2. Please note that there will be a room change. Instead of having our meeting at the Cultural Arts Center on the first floor, the meeting will be held at the 6th floor Common. It's very easy to find. Go in the regular entrance. Turn right and follow the hallway to the elevator. Take the elevator to the 6th floor and the "Common" will be right there.

Also note that because of this rescheduling, we will actually have three competitions in February (weather permitting). We will have this competition on February 2, another competition one week later on February 9, and another competition two weeks after that on February 23.

The deadline for submitting electronic images for the February 2 competition has already passed. Images were due on Friday, January 23, and this deadline will not be extended.

The deadline for submitting electronic images for the February 9 competition will be Friday, February 6. Get your images together now.

Blizzard cancels Monday's competition

In light of Monday's blizzard the NHCC competition will NOT be held on Monday and will be rescheduled

Stay tuned for details on the rescheduled competition.

And a Reminder
We usually have two back-to back competitions at the end of the season; due to the strong NE weather of late we moved the Feb program to May and the last competition to February meaning that we have TWO competitions in February.

Assigned Subjects...
Feb 9th - Teeth
Feb 23rd  - Ice

March / Alphabet letters
April  - Street Vendors

Photo competition deadline THIS Friday

Photo competition deadline THIS Friday

The NHCC handbook has been updated, please download it and read it, it is your responsibility to know the rules. The New Haven Camera Club expects that its membership will adhere to the highest ethical standards when complying with its competition rules. It is especially important that all photographs entered into competitions be the exclusive work of the maker (except for commercially made prints or digital photographs scanned from a slide original allowed by the rules).

Highlights:
  • All aspects of the image must be taken by the photographer (Clipart, Textures, etc. are NOT permitted).
  • Images of a similar nature may not be submitted again once that image has won a ribbon.
  • The winning same image (or a very similar rendition taken at the same time) may not be submitted into a different competition or in a different season.
  • Please note that there are NO makeups (in electronic images only, makeups are allowed in prints)
  • Please note that there no way to email images late if you have problems, so we urge you please do NOT to wait until the last minute to submit your photographs.
  • Setups are ONLY allowed in Class B
We have friendly photography competitions once a month (8 times a year, plus an "End of Year" competition)

  • We compete images: digital (open category), digital (assigned subject) and prints once a month (4th Monday of the month). Please see our handbook which contains the rules and instructions for competing your images.
  • There is a one time registration with the Photo Contest Pro system in order to be able to upload your images for competition.
  • Upload your images to the monthly contest before the competition deadline (competitions are the fourth Monday, deadline is the Friday  before the Monday competition).  http://www.photocontestpro.com/UploadPictures3.aspx
  • Instructions for uploading competition images
  • Please do not wait until late Friday night to discover that you need help.
  • If you have questions please email Denise denisesaldana@hotmail.com (individual members should NOT contact Jack, the author of the software that club uses, Jack will be contacted by Denise, Lisa, John, or Paul only.
  • You can save the pdf with the instructions for uploading images into competition

Number of entries per contest:

a. Each member may enter a maximum of 2 photographs into the print competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 16 entries.

b. Each member may enter a maximum of 2 photographs into the open electronic competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 16 open electronic entries.

c. Each member may enter a maximum of 1 photograph into assigned subject in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 8 assigned subject entries.

d. Each member may enter a maximum of 1 photograph into image artistry competition in each of the 8 contests, for a year's total of 8 image artistry entries.

Cumulative Score is the sum total of all print or electronic photograph scores to date. At the end of the competition year the highest 6 - 12 scores of each maker (depending on the category) are summed to determine the cumulative score. Makers can compete in more than one category and can have cumulative scores in each category. These points will count toward an award for highest cumulative point total for the year presented at the Annual Dinner.

a. To be ranked in prints (class A or B) for cumulative score, the maker must have submitted at least 12 photographs (8 contests times 2 photographs per contest and you can have 4 makeups or 4 zeros).

b. To be ranked in class B electronic photographs, the maker must have submitted at least 10 photographs (8 contests times 2 photographs per contest and you can have up to 6 zeros).

c. To be ranked in class A electronic photographs, the maker must have submitted a total of 12 photographs (8 contests times 2 photographs per contest and you can have up to 4 zeros).

d. To be ranked in image artistry, the maker must have submitted a total of 6 photographs (8 contests times 1 photograph per contest, two zeros allowed).

e. To be ranked in assigned subject, the maker must have submitted a total of 6 photographs (8 contests times 1 photograph per contest, two zeros allowed).

Each month we have the following image competitions:

(1) Prints (must be turned in by 7:15). Two classes: Class A (advanced level) and Class B (entry level, top scorer gets promoted to A at end of year)

(2) Electronic (uploaded via website prior to deadline). Two classes: Class A (advanced level) and Class B (entry level, top scorer gets promoted to A at end of year)

(3) Image Artistry category (emailed prior to deadline)

(4) Assigned subject, see topics (emailed prior to deadline). Assigned Subjects for 2013-2014 season. Please note that the electronic image assigned subject competition is in addition to the regular OPEN subject (anything goes) monthly competition.

PRINTS

1. Must be brought in by 7:15 in order for the print handlers to have time to write the titles on the score sheets and organize the prints.

2. Prints must be between 8 by 10 inches and 16 by 20 inches.

3. Prints must be mounted on mat board or foam core board. Any size mat board or foam core board is allowed up to 16"x20"

4. Prints may be matted conventionally or electronically as long as the maximum dimensions are not exceeded.

5. On the back of each print clearly print your name and address, title, order designation (1 or 2), and an arrow indicating which edge is the top. This information may be printed on one or more labels affixed to the back if you prefer not to write on the mount.

6. If you miss a meeting you are allowed to enter makeups (in prints only). The lowest 4 (class A) or 6 (class B) scores are dropped so it is your choice to take a zero for the missed print or enter a makeup print.

workshop -- Photoshop: How to Start?

Photoshop: How to Start?
Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015
7PM
Branford CT

This workshop, to be given by our own Paul Peterson, is aimed at introducing beginners to various forms of post processing. This is really an opportunity to get up to speed on learning the vocabulary of  some of the tools in software such as Photoshop Elements, and various other ways of very easily enhancing your images to bring them to the next level.

This workshop is designed for those of you who have been reluctant to attend this kind of workshop because you’re afraid it will be way above your head. This workshop will not be, and you can feel free to ask any and all questions.

No one can become an expert in Photoshop in a few hours, but this will be a stepping stone, giving you some simple ways to enhance your images.

To sign up, please email Joan at beadnik2@gmail.com or use the sign-up sheet at meetings. Workshops are free, but you must be a current member of NHCC to attend.
