Annual Holiday Party -- Last call

new PSA Nature Division definition

Hi Lisa, It is probably worth sending out a blog blast to our members with the new PSA Nature Division definition of what constitutes nature. This new definition was adopted at the recent PSA Convention held in West Yellowstone.

The new definition is as follows:

"Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining a high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements enhance the nature story. The presence of scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals is permissible. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add to, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.”

This new definition means we have new freedoms to use digital techniques to enhance our nature images. In two recent communications Dan Charbonnet added the following clarifying comments which help to understand the new rules:

“For most people, this means that the various HDR techniques are now allowed and it means blurring the background is now allowed, provided the results look natural.”

“All images must be considered “Digital Realism”, where a photographer may perform any enhancements and modifications that improve the presentation of the image to make it more closely represent the original scene photographed but that does not change the truth of the original nature story. Cropping and horizontal flipping (equivalent to reversing a slide) are acceptable modifications. Removing spots due to dust on your sensors is allowed. Removing rounded slide mount corners on scanned images is allowed. Adding elements to your images, removing pictorial elements from your image other than by cropping, combining separate images or rearranging and/or cloning and/or copying elements in your image are not still acceptable and can lead to disqualification of your image in the competition.

Since HDR techniques and Helicon Focus techniques are techniques that enhance the presentation without changing the pictorial content, they are now considered allowable techniques. Please note that all adjustments must still look natural. Just because a technique is legitimate does not guarantee the image it was used on will get a good score.”

I request that any member who enters a nature image in our competition that does not meet the above definition because of manipulations performed on it please send me an e-mail so that I do not enter it in either the NECCC or PSA nature interclub competitions. Our competitions are open without any restrictions, but we must adhere to these rules when submitting entries into the nature interclub competitions.

I would also appreciate it if you would give your nature entries descriptive names since titles are read before judging the PSA Nature Interclub. Also, try to size your entries to 350 killobytes or less as this is a requirement of the PSA EID Interclub competition and it will save me having to resize the images before I send them out.

Easy Directions for Filing, Sizing, Titling Images for Competition

Photographs must be submitted as JPEG images with the .jpg extension.

Convert the photograph to the sRGB color space. Your images may already be in that color space. If the color of your images seems off when they are projected, you may want to check this.

Our projector requires that images be no more than 1024 WIDE and no more than 768 HIGH. (If you submit a vertical image, it will typically be approximately 500 wide to allow it to be 768 high.) See illustrations.


From looking at the illustrations, you can see that images which are vertical or square will be smaller than horizontal images.
Titles - Please use the following format.

Class&Image Number$LastName$FirstName$Title$Year-month (numeral).jpg

Examples B1$Jones$Bill$Red_Skier$2009-11.jpg

B2$Jones$Bill$At_The_Beach$2009-11.jpg

S1$Jones$Bill$Glassware$2009-11.jpg

S is used for the assigned subject.

Do not leave any spaces. Use the underline character “_”instead of spaces.

Note: Your computer may automatically put .jpg at the end of the title. If that is the case, you should not put .jpg at the end or you will end up with .jpg.jpg

Look carefully at your completed title to make sure that it is correct.

Have you used the dollar sign $ to separate fields?
Have you used the underline “_” between words in the title?

Are the year and month correct?

Does it end in .jpg ?

Organization Hint: Make a folder for NHCC Possible Comp images. These should be duplicates of your better photographs. Make another folder for NHCC Competition 2009-10. Don’t put anything into this folder unless it is sized correctly and titled correctly. When you open this folder, all of your images will be in the same format and you can simply copy what you have
previously done.

This competition was judged by the West Cumbria Photo Group of Great Britain, the first time the competition has been judged outside of North America. This year the competition has been divided into two classes, A and B. We are in class A along with a number of very strong nature clubs. For this competition Boston West Photographic Society was in first place with 76 points. We were near the middle of the pack with 67 points. In this competition, which was scored from 3 to 15, it took a score of 14 to earn an HM. Best regards, Bill

The first letter is A, B, OR S for special category.You can enter TWO images in A or B and in TWO images in S. The A or B open competition photographs do NOT have to be the same subject as the special category.

2. Prints must be between 8 by 10 inches and 16 by 20 inches.

3. Prints must be mounted on mat board or foam core board. Any size mat board or foam core board is allowed up to 16"x20".

4. Prints may be matted conventionally or electronically as long as the maximum dimensions are not exceeded.

5. On the back of each print clearly print your name and address, title, order designation (1 or 2), and an arrow indicating which edge is the top. This information may be printed on one or more labels affixed to the back if you prefer not to write on the mount.

If you are submitting make-up photographs, use the year and month of the competition being made up rather than the year and month of the competition into which entered. If entering make-up photographs for the October 2008 competition in the January 2009 competition, the year and month should be “2008-10”, not “2009-01”.• When inserting the competition date, use a 4 digit year (for example 2007) followed by a dash (“-“) followed by a two digit month (09, 10, 11, 01, 02, 03, 04, or 05).

The reason I joined the NHCC): Retirement has allowed me the time to become a more serious photographer. The NHCC is an excellent place to learn more about photography. I learn so much from all the great photos that are shared and from the workshops.

Favorite Photography Subject matter: Macro- flowers, dragonflies, insects, nature… I like to combine photography with my art.

Favorite photography trip: I had the opportunity of going to Paris with my sisters in May. That was a wonderful photography trip!! The best part of being a photographer is: Creating an artistic photo is like a spiritual experience for me. It is exciting and I lose track of time.

I became interested in photography when… I received my first Brownie camera! Later on, my father gave me his Leica camera, which he had purchased in Europe right before WWII. That camera was incredible. I was hooked.

My advice to other photographers is: Take Photoshop one day at a time (I need to remember that advice too!).

What is something about you that NHCC members do not know? I am so lucky to have 2 grandchildren.

Me & Dad – 2nd Place – Digital A - this photo was taken during a client photo session with 10 week old Hunter and his dad, Glenn. The pose was directed but the lighting was a happy accident – a the studio strobe on the right side did not fire by accident. The main light at 45 degree angle was an Alien Bee 800 watt studio light with a beauty dish and additional “sock” diffuser. (not sure of power setting on this light, but probably 1/8th power) TECHNICAL : F7.1, 1/160 shutter speed, -2.33 exposure compensation, ISO 200, Nikon D700, 24-70mm f2.8 Nikon lens set at 38mm



Seize the Day – 2nd place – prints – Another photo of a client - Mayson. Alien Bee 800watt (not sure of power setting on this light, but probably 1/8th power) with beauty dish and sock to the left and 60 watt light with Soft box on right.

I placed one-year-old Mayson in the flower pot with the giant flowers and just shot away while she got all excited by the dish of Cheerios hidden in the pot. ECHNICAL: F5.0, 1/200 shutter speed, -1 exposure compensation, ISO 320, Nikon D700, 24-70mm F2.8 Nikon lens set at 34mm

NHCC RAFFLE

At our next Camera Club meeting (11/9) we will have two raffles. The first will be our regular 50:50 raffle for $CASH$. The second will be a raffle for a brand new ProShow Gold. ProShow Gold is the industry standard for making professional looking slide shows with ease.... so easy a Caveman could do it :-) Tickets for the ProShow Gold raffle will be $2 for one ticket and $5 for three tickets. Denise Saldana will be selling the regular raffle tickets, and Joan Balen will be selling the ProShow Gold tickets.

November program: Photoshop as a tool in the Digital Darkroom

Please note that Gary from Fiddlehead photography had to reschedule his November presentation of "Wilfelife Photography" that he was supposed in November. I have agreed to swap with Gary and present in November and Gary will present in April.

November 9th -- Lisa will discuss the use of Photoshop as a tool in the ‘digital darkroom’. In this basic Photoshop program she will demonstrate ‘non-destructive’ editing techniques such as adjustment layers, some of the most often used filters (Sharpen, Blur, Artistic) and demonstrate some popular editing tools (Crop, Clone, Patch, Heal, Hue Saturation, Color Balance, Black and White).

In addition, she will show you how to apply an effect to a selected area of your photograph. This introductory program is designed for people who are computer literate but new to Photoshop.

Digital mini slide shows (holiday party)
As in past years Bill Barnett will be bringing his computer to the holiday party on December 14th and is willing to show electronic (digital) mini slide show sequences for other members as long as he has them before the event so that he can make sure they will run properly. Please bring your slideshow to Bill by the Nov 23rd meeting (or make sure that it is mailed to Bill and received by Dec1 st)

According to our Handbook the rules for electronic shows are:

"Presentation of the electronic shows requires a computer to connect to the Club’s projector. There is usually a Club member, however, who brings a laptop computer and is willing to project members’ shows (including a set of speakers for the sound). The shows he/she will be able to project will depend on the type of laptop he/she has, for example Windows only, Macintosh only, or a computer that can run both types of shows. If a member wishes to take advantage of this service and his/her show is compatible with the available computer, the following rules apply:

• The member providing the group computer will make a “best effort” attempt to run the show, though there may be cases where this is not possible.

• The show format must be one that the computer being provided can handle. Shows in the .exe format (from Pro Show gold on Windows) or .app format (from FotoMagico on the Macintosh) are normally the simplest to handle. However, it may be possible to project shows in other formats depending on the capabilities of the computer being provided. Shows consisting of a group of JPEG images numbered in the correct sequence with sound provided by an external player may also be accepted, but the member will have to sequence the timing during presentation of the show.

• Shows to be displayed using the group computer must be given to the member providing the computer at or before the second November meeting of the Club so that the member providing the computer has an opportunity to be sure the shows will run properly before the competition night. Shows will normally be provided on CD, though other media may be acceptable if agreed upon between the person providing the show and the member providing the computer. CD’s should not be configured to “auto run” as this makes it more difficult to copy the files to the hard drive of the group computer.

• The show files (or directory containing multiple files if more than one required) should be named as follows: LastName-FirstName-Title, for example “Barnett-William-Bridges of Somerset County”. This will allow the shows to be copied to a single directory for projection and be easily identified."

Bill has a MacBook that can handle shows in both Windows and Macintosh formats.

some more ribbon winners from October's competition



More winning images, HM and second place from October's competition...

Hi Lisa, This my dog Max. I caught him on my bed and thought would make a good photo. I went to get my camera and he was still there. Camera is a canon sx10. flash was used and hand held. Ron D'Amico


1) Dutch Iris -2nd prize. My garden inspires much of my photography. I brought these irises inside and used a translucent softbox with lights on the outside to take this photo. I used a dark blue backdrop and my macro lens (100mm). Both color and light are very important to me, and with these flowers the blue/purple hue was a challenge. I find that specific color hard to reproduce in digital images and had to play with the white balance and the hue to get it just right. Also I knew I wanted some diagonal effects and I arranged the leaves to create the composition I wanted.



2)Flaming Tulip-Honorable Mention. This tulip also grows in my garden. Again, I brought it inside but this time I used a window to light the photo. I am interested in paper marbling and have created many different marbled papers which I use as a background for some of my photos. I chose a paper that I felt complemented the tulip and spent much time deciding where I would place the tulip in relation to the designs on the background. Also the distance between the flower and the background became very important. As the photo session went on, the tulip opened wider and wider, which I felt was improving the photo. My mind saw whorls of color and light. Thanks, Denise Saldaña
The title of the image is "Mr. and Mrs. Duck". It was taken with a macro lens, hand-held at Elizabeth Park in June 2009. I was trying to get an image of a bird(s) and they would not stay still. Laura Messina

Attached is my Class b HM image, "The Greenhouse Door". It was taken in August 2009 at Harkness Memorial Park on a CAP Trip. The Greeenhouse at Harkness are to be rebuilt perhaps next year. I took the photo with my Nikon D40x camera, Nikon lens 18-55 mm lense. It was taken hand held. I was trying to capture the mood and paradox of a derelict greenhouse door and what is growing there. NHCC Program Change

Please note that Gary from Fiddlehead photography had to reschedule his November presentation of "Wilfelife Photography" that he was supposed in November. I have agreed to swap with Gary and present in November and Gary will present in April.

November 9th -- Lisa will discuss the use of Photoshop as a tool in the ‘digital darkroom’. In this basic Photoshop program she will demonstrate ‘non-destructive’ editing techniques such as adjustment layers, some of the most often used filters (Sharpen, Blur, Artistic) and demonstrate some popular editing tools (Crop, Clone, Patch, Heal, Hue Saturation, Color Balance, Black and White).

In addition, she will show you how to apply an effect to a selected area of your photograph. This introductory program is designed for people who are computer literate but new to Photoshop.
